I upgrade to internet explorer 7 or 8 and the top right hand corner there is a handy search area. Defaulting to Bing or live search. I will change that to google, i thought, but when i tried there was an error. hmmm

I think this is an accidentally on purpose error to try and erroneously up bing's search usage.

To fix this the easy way, install google toolbar http://google.com/toolbar  and then the search area will become google.

You can remove the google bar afterwards if you like and it will remain google.
